چکیده
Because of the reactivity of oxygen with biologically impor tan t compounds, e.g. unsaturated lipids, SH-conta in ing proteins and cofactors, and redox compounds (see review by Haugaard , 1968), cells in aerobic envi ronments require some mean(s) for protect ion from indiscr iminate oxidation. Since the superoxide free radical, O2, is apparently a major product of the reaction of 02 with reduced compounds (Misra and Fridovich, 1972), Fridovich and co-workers have proposed an 02 protective mechanism based on the O~--scavenging enzyme, superox ide d i s m u t a s e (SOD) (McCord and Fridovich, 1969; McCord et al., 1971; Gregory and Fridovich, 1973 a). This report describes the combined occurrence of the following physiological characteris t ics in a m u t a n t s t ra in of the green alga Chlorella sorokiniana (Shihira and Krauss): (a) resistance to high part ial pressures of 02, (b) resistance to the O~--genera t ing antibiotic, streptonigrin, and (c) resistance to UV irradiat ion. The mutan t also contained a 3.5-fold higher level of SOD when grown under air than did the wild-type strain. These correlat ions provide substantial evidence tha t an 02 detoxification system (probably involving SOD) functions to protect the mutan t s train from, not only 02 toxicity, but also, some fract ion of UV-media ted damage.

Characterization of Phosphate Membrane Transport in Saccharomyces cerevisiae CEN.PK113-5D under Low-Phosphate Conditions Using Aerobic Continuous Culture
Two different growth media, namely complex and defined media, were used to examine establishment of steady-state conditions in phosphate-limited culture system of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CEN.PK113-5D strain. Using the defined growth medium, it was possible to obtain steady state condition in the continuous culture. The effect of phosphate concentration on the growth of S. cerevisiae in pho...

Background: In vitro culture of ovarian follicles may preserve fertility in women with premature ovarian failure due to cancer .It seems that creation a condition that could maintain cellular communications and supports growth of follicles to produce mature oocytes appear to be essential. Nitric oxide (NO) has been recently shown to act with a dual action in mouse oocyte meiotic maturation depe...
متن کاملRelationships Between Seedling Growth Rate and Yield of Maize Cultivars Under Normal and Water Stress Conditions
Abstract Effects of water stress on root and leaf growth rates and their relationships with yield under normal and water stress conditions were examined at the Greenhouse and Research Field of Faculty of Agriculture, Kerman University, Iran, using seven maize cultivars including SC-404, SC-704, BC-666, TC-647, DC-370, Jeta and Kordona. During a period of 14 days, water stress at -0.4 MPa was ...
متن کاملGrowth rate assessment of high lipid producing microalga Botryococcus braunii in different culture media
The green colonial microalga, Botryococcus braunii is well known for its high lipid content and has already been proposed as a renewable energy source for various aquaculture and biotechnological applications. However, due to its slow growth rate compared with other microalgae, B. braunii has not yet been used in mass culture to produce more biomass. Therefore, in this study we tested different...
متن کاملThe Effects of Fibroblast Co-Culture and Activin A on in vitro Growth of Mouse Preantral Follicles
Background: This study was conducted to evaluate fibroblast co-culture and Activin A on in vitro maturation and fertilization of mouse preantral follicles. Methods: The ovaries from 12-14-day-old mice were dissected, and 120-150 μm preantral follicles were cultured individually in α-MEM as based medium for 12 days. A total number of 456 follicles were cultured in four conditions: (i) base mediu...
